What We Do

Portland started its TechHire journey by working with employer partners including Square Space, Metal Toad, and Portland General Electric to build a pipeline that could fill the 2,400 technology job openings in the Portland Metro area. Code Oregon was created to provide access to high-quality training to teach Oregonians how to code, with a goal of  filling local jobs or helping workers advance in careers in software development and technology. Since launching Code Oregon in June 2014, over 16,500 Oregon residents have signed up to build coding skills. More than 150,000 badges have been earned and nearly 300 language tracks completed. A Code Oregon Job Fair held in December 2015 boasted 300 talented job seekers vying for positions with nearly 20 local employers.

Portland is now building Code Oregon 2.0 to expand available training options and strengthen several of Code Oregon’s foundational objectives, including connecting participants to the public workforce development system, incorporating job training and internships, expanding the network of tech mentors to offer additional support to under-served communities, cross-walking community college and university curriculum with on-line badges, and providing transferable college credit to students who complete designated Code Oregon 2.0 tracks.
